Step inside the Ministry of Public Education and you’ll be surrounded by more than 200 breathtaking panels painted by some of Mexico’s greatest muralists—Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Manuel Felguérez, Roberto Montenegro, Luis Nishizawa, and many more. Recently restored and reborn as a formal museum in January 2025, this is the place to fully experience the power of Mexico’s modern muralist movement. It’s difficult to capture in words—an overwhelming feast of color, history, and imagination that immerses you in over a century of artistic brilliance. Most of the murals are over 100 years old. The venue was inaugurated as a museum in 2025.
Roughly half a dozen new nooks and crannies have been added including an overview of the history of the building itself (some parts were a customs house, other parts a convent), an overview of the muralist movement itself, the importance of folk art and an impressive collection of never-before-seen murals and paintings. This visit will give you a solid understanding of the origins of Mexico’s muralist movement plus much more.
