The vibrant works of well-known and yet-to-be-discovered Mexican and Latin American artists are on view in museums and galleries around the city. The variety of art in the capital ranges from the more traditional Museum of Modern Art (20th century Mexican art), the Dolores Olmedo Museum (which houses the largest private collection of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo paintings (Frida’s works are often on tour, so double check if that is your interest), the Palace of Fine Arts (with impressive frescos by Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Jose Clemente Orozco and other artists) and the emblematic Soumaya Museum (housing Mexican magnate Carlos Slim’s personal art collection famous for its Dali and Rodin sculptures as well as colonial art).
Sundry contemporary art venues with impressive installational art abound, such as the Tamayo Museum, new-kid-on-the-block Jumex Museum and the MUAC Museum of Contemporary Art, aside from dozens of established art galleries including Casa Lamm, OMR, Proyectos Monclova and Kurimanzutto to name a few.
Whether your interest is modern or contemporary art – for viewing or purchase – Mexico City is definitely the place to visit! Dozens if not hundreds of museums, galleries and ateliers to choose from depending on your particular taste.
