Exploring Modern and Contemporary Art

The vibrant works of well-known and yet-to-be-discovered Mexican and Latin American artists are on view in museums and galleries dotting the city. The variety of art in the capital ranges from the more traditional Museum of Modern Art (20th century Mexican art), the Dolores Olmedo Museum (which houses the largest private collection of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo paintings, although Frida’s works are often on tour), the Palace of Fine Arts (with impressive frescos by Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Jose Clemente Orozco and other muralists) and the emblematic Soumaya Museum (housing Mexican magnate Carlos Slim’s personal art collection famous for its Dali and Rodin sculptures as well as colonial art).

Sundry contemporary art venues with impressive installational art also abound, both in museums and galleries.  There is the Tamayo Museum, the  Jumex Museum, ECO and the MUAC (University Museum of Contemporary Art) to name a few, as well as dozens of established art galleries such as Casa Lamm, OMR, Proyectos Monclova and Kurimanzutto.

Whether your interest is modern or contemporary art – for viewing or for purchase – Mexico City is definitely the hot spot!  Dozens if not hundreds of museums, galleries and ateliers to choose from depending on your particular taste.  Let us help you put together a unique tour to see the art that interests you.
