Chiapas Jungle Adventure

We’ve put a temporary hold on our Chiapas Jungle trips this year given the critical circumstances of intense migration along the southern border of Mexico, the confrontations and uprisings among indigenous communities, and burgeoning cartel activity in the remote jungle areas we visit.  We are constantly monitoring the situation based on information from our local guide contacts and will continue to assess the situation as it unfolds.  Your safety is our number one priority.

This is a description of what we did and may offer again in the future:

During this amazing (6-day, 5-night) trek through the states of Tabasco and Chiapas, we explore the Maya zone that we know and love, focusing on various aspects of Maya culture: ancient civilizations as well as the modern indigenous peoples of this region.

We explore prehispanic ruins in the tropical rain forest (Comalcalco, Palenque, Yaxchilan and Bonampak), visit two Indian communities in the Chiapas highlands (San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan), and introduce you to indigenous artisans who are masters in the crafts that the Chiapas highlands are renown for.  We’ll meander through a functioning cacao plantation, navigate the Usumacinta and Grijalva Rivers and see an impressive variety of waterfalls and wildlife in natural habitat. There is something for everyone’s taste!

In brief, this is a trip for people interested in nature, history, archaeology, modern-day Indian cultures, shopping and food, providing an extraordinary opportunity to see breathtaking Maya ruins, enjoy lush tropical settings, and witness the rich colonial heritage and the vibrant indigenous cultures of the highlands of Chiapas.

Let us know if you are interested in joining us and we’ll be in touch once we have determined the dates for our next trip.
